Sungrow 760MWh BESS, off-grid inverter project deal in Saudi Arabia

Sungrow 760MWh BESS, off-grid inverter project deal in Saudi Arabia

Sungrow has agreed to collaborate on the deployment of a 160 MW/760 MW battery energy storage system (BESS) and a 165 MW photovoltaic inverter for AMAALA, a large-scale off-grid project in Saudi Arabia.
The Chinese company has “formed a strategic partnership” with engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) firm Larsen & Toubro to pursue clean energy projects. Sangrow said the project, located on the Red Sea coast, will provide continuous renewable energy for the local desalination plant and wastewater treatment plant of the large-scale tourism project AMAALA.
The solar and energy storage project is developed and led by French utility and independent power producer (IPP) EDF Group and UAE state-owned renewable energy company IPP Masdar for client Red Sea Global.
The project will also be equipped with a 10 MW “demonstration platform” that will use advanced simulation models such as Hil semi-physical simulation, DigSilent and PSCAD to ensure system reliability in various scenarios.
Red Sea Global is a Saudi state-owned developer responsible for several major flagship infrastructure projects, including AMAALA, as the country tries to diversify its fossil fuel-based economy. The AMAALA tourism project is expected to be completed in 2027, by which time the Sungrow projects may have to be operational.
In December 2022, Sungrow signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with local IPP ACWA Power to install a 536MW/600MW BESS at Neom, another Red Sea Global large-scale project, in 2022, and nine months later signed it and entered into an agreement . firm contract.
Neom was a linear urban development designed to create a route through the desert several miles to the sea, but its length was recently reduced from 170 kilometers to just 2.4 kilometers.
Solar Media, publisher of Energy-Storage.news, will host the second Asia Energy Storage Summit on July 9-10, 2024 in Singapore. The event will help shed light on this evolving but rapidly growing market by bringing together a community of trusted independent power producers, policy makers, banks, funds, buyers and technology providers.
