Commissioners received an update on the status of the Taylor Mountain Volunteer Fire Department from Barry Holstein, the only remaining board member.
Holstein, who has only been on the board for about a month, told commissioners that according to the bylaws, new board members cannot be added until after the Sept. 19 election.
Holstein said Taylor Mountain has 21 firefighters on staff, 17 of whom are currently certified to respond to fires. Of the 10 people who resigned earlier this summer, eight returned or never resigned.
Kanawha County Homeland Security and Emergency Management Director K.V. Sigman said the department responded to a large structure fire to which overnight firefighters returned.
“We would not be receiving fire calls from this station now if you had not remained on the board after you resigned,” said commission Chairman Lance Wheeler.
Holstein, whose term ends in September, said it was the firefighters’ retirement that sparked his interest in joining the board.
“I worry about my community when things like this happen,” he said. “If I can be helpful or have value in it and try to help, then I definitely will.”
The County Commission has approved Thursday, October 31st, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, as the date for Kanawha County’s Halloween celebration.
Commissioners were also given a timeline for updating the court application. The Legislature added one district court judge and three magistrate judges to the Kanawha County court system.
Jody Driggs of Silling Architects told the committee the entire project could be completed by summer 2026. It will be implemented in stages.
The courtroom at the new Richard Lindsay District Court will be completed in January 2025, with the courtroom ready in July. An alternative courtroom for Judge Lindsay may be found in the county until the courtroom for Judge Lindsay is completed.
Another major upgrade to the security and magistrates’ court facilities will be completed in October next year. The courthouse will remain open during renovations.

Carrie Ward Smith, co-owner of 1010 Bridge restaurant and wife of chef Paul Smith, has been introduced as the new executive director of the Central West Virginia Convention and Visitors Bureau.
“I’m looking forward to maximizing West Virginia’s experience and letting people know what we have to offer, how we can support each other and work closely with other CVBs to make sure it’s a place everyone wants to come and experience. ” said Smith.
CVB board member Andrew Gunno said having an executive director means the CVB can gain recognition. The CVB must be accredited to collect hotel/motel occupancy taxes.
