Diamond Foundry creates first diamond-based electric vehicle inverter that’s 6 times smaller

SAN FRANCISCO , Nov. 7, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Diamond Foundry Inc. (“DF”) announced today that it has used its diamond wafer technology to create an electric vehicle inverter that improves the efficiency of electric vehicles.
The power electronics package is six times smaller than the Tesla 3, but delivers more power and is more efficient.
This new level of miniaturization is achieved through a clever design that combines diamond wafers with proven silicon carbide molds.
Tesla revolutionized power electronics in electric vehicles by leading the introduction of silicon carbide. Now, new technology components are enabling new architectures that will further transform the industry.
The design of power semiconductors is essentially driven by two factors: thermal conductivity (the way they cool) and electrical conductivity (the way large currents flow). Although electrical pathways have been studied for many years with greater or less success, thermal pathways have always presented a major challenge. In addition, due to safety requirements at high voltages, power semiconductors must be isolated from the rest of the environment. Voltage insulation barriers typically have poor thermal conductivity.
It is now possible to exploit two extreme properties of diamond plates: extreme thermal properties and extreme electrical insulation. The advent of cost-effective diamond wafers has opened up unprecedented new possibilities for the design of power electronic devices. Because the benefits of these new developments are so obvious, it is hard not to imagine that they will become the standard in power electronics.
Diamond Foundry Inc. is the world’s No. 1 producer of single-crystal diamonds, and its Washington State foundry is ten times the size of the second largest foundry in the United States. The company is helping shape the future by solving the temperature constraints that underpin each of today’s most exciting major technology industries, including artificial intelligence, electric vehicles and wireless communications.
