The Canonsburg Volunteer Fire Department is helping officials recruit volunteers and donations to continue flood relief efforts in West Virginia.
West Virginia officials said in a Facebook post Saturday that they are looking for “people willing to help with cleanup in the Valley Grove/Triadelphia area” as large amounts of debris are still being removed and flood victims continue to clean up their homes.
”They (officials) are looking for labor,” another Canonsburg Fire Department post about the West Virginia cleanup said. “Thank you all. Please share with others who may be interested in helping.”
As temperatures begin to soar in Pennsylvania and West Virginia, officials are asking for donations to help victims and workers stay hydrated while cleanup efforts continue, the department said.
”They will need drinks like water and Gatorade for the next week, as well as cold towels and coolers to keep drinks cold,” the post said.
Earlier, flooding in northern West Virginia killed at least five people and caused severe damage to roads, bridges, gas lines and other infrastructure.
“Our brothers and sisters in West Virginia went through some tough times this past weekend, and we saw some people reaching out for help and wanting to get some supplies,” Cannonsburg Fire Chief Tim Solobe told Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 last week. “Our department decided to reach out.”
Previously, the Western Pennsylvania Department asked for and collected donations of: bleach, gloves, toilet paper, mops, buckets, paper towels, brooms, shelves, trash bags, shovels, first aid kits, paper plates, silverware, flashlights, batteries, pet food, diapers and food from the shelves.
Volunteers are asked to arrive at the West Alexandria Convention Center at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday and then leave at 9:30 a.m. and be assigned to designated areas.
Canonsburg Volunteer Corps officials said more information will be released this week about when and where donations will be dropped off for victims in western Pennsylvania, as well as other updates.
