ABB presented a new motor and inverter package for electric buses at the Bus Show 2024 in Turkey. The new kit uses the first three-level inverter for passenger cars, which can reduce engine losses over a typical driving cycle by up to 12% compared to previous two-level inverters, ABB said.
The new kit consists of an AMXE250 motor and a HES580 inverter, specifically designed for electric buses. The new solution was presented at the Bus World Turkey exhibition.
The HES580 is the first three-level inverter on the electric bus market. According to ABB itself, the HES580 has excellent energy efficiency and power output. The organization states: “Compared to conventional two-level inverters, the HES580 reduces motor harmonic losses by as much as 75%, significantly reducing heat generation and maximizing energy savings. The key to this superior performance is its innovative three-tier architecture. In dual-level inverters that switch between two voltage levels (DC+ and DC-), the HES580 introduces a third voltage step, the neutral point. By halving the voltage step during each switching operation, current ripple is reduced and thus harmonic losses are reduced. As a result, the AMXE250 engine runs more efficiently, delivering better performance in a variety of driving conditions.”
Additionally, HES580 can benefit AMXE250 motors by reducing harmonic effects and minimizing stress on motor windings, extending their life and increasing their reliability.
Additionally, the AMXE250 is a compact permanent magnet synchronous motor designed for efficient motion. The engine also features high torque density for improved dynamic performance and quieter operation for improved passenger comfort. The HES580 and AMXE250 are designed to be spaced apart, allowing the operator to further optimize space.
David Segbers, Global Product Manager at ABB Traction, said: “We are pleased to bring to market the first three-level inverter for electric buses. Designed for ideal performance, the motor-inverter package will provide operators and OEMs with the ultimate solution. and others lead to significant improvements in energy efficiency.”
Fabiana Cavalcante, Global Head of Mobility Power at ABB, said: “This electrification of buses is a key part of creating sustainable public transport that improves quality of life. We are pleased to be able to offer forward-looking solutions to help. the industry is achieving its sustainability and productivity goals.”
